Cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2α) catalyzes the hydrolysis of membrane glycerophospholipids to release arachidonic acid, which is converted to bio-active eicosanoid lipid mediators, including prostaglandins (like PGE2) produced through cyclo-oxygenases (COX).
